Notable retirees and contract extensions:

Robert Horry, Brent Barry, and Gary Payton have all retired.

Hubie Brown, Lenny Wilkens, and Mike Montgomery have all called quits on their coaching careers.

Jerry West has retired as a GM.

Isiah Thomas has his contract extended by the Knicks. I laugh.

Mike Brown and Mike Diantoni's coaching careers continue with the Cavs and Suns, thanks to taking them deep in the playoffs.

Greg Masters, the Bucks owner, holds a big dinner for me, my staff, and the rest of the team. It's like he filled an entire reception hall with one big Bucks booster club. The night ends well, everyone has a good time, and Masters invites me for a one-on-one informal sitdown.

He tells me that he is excited with what we've accomplished this season. A freaking NBA Title, for crying out loud. He also loves the fact that we did it without even going over the cap (I managed to keep the salary about 900k below the salary cap). We go over the details of the team and talk about where we go from here. He tells me if I think the Bucks are going to be an average team this year like I said last year. I laugh. I tell him that we're going to make the playoffs, at least. He's pleased, saying that we might have had a great run this year, but he believes that other teams will be gunning for us this season. He then asks about salaries, and I ask for more leeway to spend, perhaps going 10 to 15 mil above the cap. He tells me that I will have to keep expenses low, so I won't get much leeway. He wants me to keep player salaries near the cap. Well... that sucks.

Draft Workouts

We have the #30 pick and we seriously do not have anyone that we think we're going to take at that spot. I'll see to trading the pick away for a second rounder. We do hold workout with several players, just in case we want to jump ahead.

2008 NBA DRAFT - June 28, 2008

Here we go with the 2008 NBA draft. We're seriously considering trading away the #30 pick if we don't find a suitable PG-type player to select when our turn comes.

The top 3 players on people's lists are SF Brian Doctor from North Carolina St., SG Myron Adams from Connectictut, and SG Anu Paulauskas from Lithuania. There is a rumor going around that the Wizards are considering trading away the #1 pick, but noone takes it seriously.

The commissioner walks up the podium and announces the first pick.

1. Washington Wizards - SG Myron Adams - The Wizards get a gift dropped on their lap, as they select Myron Adams, a ridiculously talented shooting guard. Adams averaged 29.6 ppg, 7.2 apg, 13.0 rpg, 3.1 spg, and 2.3 bpg as a freshman in Connecticut last season.

2. Atlanta Hawks - SF Mark Howard - There is a huge uproar on this pick by the Hawks. JP says that he would have gone with Doctor instead of Howard. Chris says, however, that Howard is a talented player and will find a way to shine in the NBA.

3. Orlando Magic - SF Brian Doctor - The Magic get a great pick in Doctor. He's talented and is NBA-ready. Aside from that, think about the merchandising on this guy! The Doctor is In!

4. Memphis Grizzlies - Anu Paulauskas
5. New Jersey Nets - PG Donald Braun

6. New Orleans Hornets - PF Gerrick Baxter - JP and Chris think that Baxter was taken about 5 to 10 picks too early.

7. Minnesota Timberwolves - C Brandin Levett

8. New York Knicks - SG Brad Granberry - The Knicks amazingly select an SG to add to their plethora of wing players. The pick gets booed, and FIRE ISIAH chants start. A little hint... THEY RESIGNED HIM!!! Chris reasons that Granberry is a good player and should be able to find minutes in New York.

9. Portland Trailblazers - SF Lavor Nixon
10. Los Angeles Lakers - PF Matt Greenwalt
11. Golden State Warriors - C John Anderson

12. Dallas Mavericks - SF Toomas Zukauskas - The other Lithuanian in the draft gets picked by the Blazers, and JP likes this pick for what it is.

13. Charlotte Bobcats - SG Ervin Gunn
14. Philadelphia 76ers - SG Scott Duncan
15. Indiana Pacers - PG Robert Johnson
16. Boston Celtics - SG Dickey Dotson
17. Los Angeles Clippers - PG Ramon Sawyer
18. Chicago Bulls - PF Darius Jackson
19. Utah Jazz - SG Fredrik Johnson
20. Seattle Supersonics - C Darrell Tibbetts
21. Toronto Raptors - SF Dereck Allison
22. Denver Nuggets - PG Cassidy Johnson
23. San Antonio Spurs - PF Tony Taylor
24. Detroit Pistons - SG Dickey Dotson
25. Houston Rockets - SG Bryant Osbourne
26. Miami Heat - SF Will Murphy
27. Cleveland Cavaliers - PG Marty Booker
28. Sacramento Kings - C Michael Emerson
29. Phoenix Suns - C Valder Owens

We take a look at who's left on the table and decide we really don't like anyone left, so we shop around our pick and find a taker.

The Seattle Supersonics receive our 1st round pick (#30 overall), and trade us four 2nd rounders (#31, #50 this year, and the Sonics 2009 and 2010 2nd rounders).

30. Seattle Supersonics - PG Steve Duggins

In the 2nd round we grab two guys that we like.

(#31 overall) PF Jason Ellis - Ellis was projected as a late 1st round pick. He averaged 12 ppg and 18 rpg as a senior in Louisville.

(#50 overall) PG Billy Selby - There were several PGs left, and we had to choose the one we felt had a good chance of at least making it to the D-League, if ever.

Post-draft Analysis:

This was a good draft, but we didn't have high picks. Jason Ellis turns out to be a nice pick for a 2nd rounder, while Selby was a throwaway. We decide to sign Ellis to a 3-year contract.

June 30, 2008 - Contracts:

Contracts To Renounce:

SG Derek Anderson - $2,400,000
PG Earl Boykins - $9,600,000
SG Yakhouba Diawara - $ 900,000
PF Charlie Villanueva - $ 4,000,000
PF Eric Williams - $2,400,000

I renounce everyone, opting instead for the $10,000,000 of cap space that we're going to get if we renounce everyone.

Summer League:

Same as last year, we try to send everyone we can to the summer league.

PG Acie Law
PG Billy Selby
SF Julian Wright
SF Corey Brewer
PF Jason Ellis
C Channing Frye

We even invite Charlie Villanueva to play with our team.

July 7, 2008 - @ Sacramento - WIN (96-86)

Charlie Villanueva scores 23 points and leads us over the Kings in a quasi-rematch of the NBA Finals. Julian Wright scored 13 points and Acie Law contributed 12.

July 9, 2008 - vs San Antonio - WIN (104-91)

Charlie Villanueva has 24 points and Julian Wright scored 12 in this win over the Spurs.

July 11, 2008 - @ Toronto - WIN (100-94)

Charlie Villanueva continues to make a strong case for us to resign him. He's actually making me regret renouncing our bird rights on him. He scores 33 points and grabs 10 rebounds for the win.

July 13, 2008 - vs. Washington - WIN (122-77)

Charlie V. leads the way with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists. Julian Wright had 21 points, while Acie Law had 15 points and 11 assists.

July 15, 2008 - @ Utah - LOSS (110-105)

Charlie V stumbles in the last game of the summer league with only 9 points. Acie Law leads us with 21.

Summer league is over! Yay. Charlie Villanueva will most likely get his dollars this season... let's see if we can bring him back for cheap.
