Florida State (12-5, 4-1 ACC) at Duke (10-7, 0-5 ACC)

TEAM: FSU|DUKE
OVR: 89|84
OFF: 88|85
DEF: 90|84
SHT: 89|86
REB: 93|86
COA: 86|88

Well hopefully we can find a road edge over a Duke squad that hasn't won in the ACC yet. Although admittedly they haven't played a single one of the easier teams in the league... losses to UNC, Va Tech, road losses to BC and NCSU and a home loss to Ga Tech. So I'm not expecting us to blow them out, but 0-5... a good team finds a couple wins in that run.

We beat a much better than this Duke team last year, they lost 90 rated soph PG Alfred Ball to the NBA and have a 67 rated freshman in his place.

Scouting

PG Dwayne Wong – FR – 67 OVR – 82 defense... 88 speed... that's all i've got that's good to say. 75 close/69 med/72 3. C- hands/C passing. 4.3 ppg.

SG Jerry Colter – JR – 83 OVR – 91 speed/85 quickness. 85 defense/81 steals. 82 close/83 med/83 3. Not great in traffic or off the dribble, and not a particularly noteworthy athlete. A good shooter, good defender with speed. Not really very good awareness. 11.8 ppg.

SF Pedro Gastel – SR – 86 OVR – 6'6” natural SF – 81 speed/75 quickness. 78 defense/72 steals. 93 close/86 med/82 3/87 in traffic. Definitely an offensive player. He doesn't have a lot of speed of defensive abilities. Good leaper, average hustle... we'll see how it translates on the court. 16.2 ppg/6.6 rpg so far this year, seems to clearly be the #1 option. Gastel is a coach on the floor.

PF Reid Luiz – SO – 81 OVR – Natural SF – just 6'5” - 77 orb/83 drb. 69 post off/67 post def. 82 close/82 in traffic. He's a fairly solid looking SF, but just so far out of place playing the 4. 8.4 ppg/7.7 rpg nonetheless.

C Ulrich Mathis – SR – 74 OVR – 6'7” PF – 77 orb/83 drb. 85 post o ff/79 post def. 90 close/83 in traffic. 5.5 ppg.

Duke has a backup SF rated 77 OVR. No one else on the team is rated over 75... we should have a huge edge here. They do have a 68-44 unity edge thanks to the coach on the floor. And we're at Cameron.

Timeout Duke. Gastel scored 4 for them in the first 2 minutes and they've gone cold since.

I get a timeout to get the backups in. Gastel has 10 of their 12 points. Barrett will stick him and we'll see if that works better on him. Can't complain given the score regardless.

Day explodes for 5 quick points, Duke's turn for a timeout.

I get another timeout to get the starters back in, backups scored ok but played shit defense.

Jesus... Gastel with 19, Moye with 3 straight open 3's whiffed in a row. I call a timeout. I'm putting barrett in with the starters to try to slow Gastel.

HALF

Well they hit a 3 from 28 feet out as time expires to take the lead. Duke plays a 2-3 zone mixed with some 1-2-2 zone. And you know what that means. Moye is stubbornly jacking up 3's time after time after time. He's 1-8. No more of that.

Gastel has 19, Colter has 9 for t hem... their two clear top rated players. Barrett will play more minutes in the second half and guard Gastel.

Moye leads us with 11, Day has 8 off the bench, Sneed 6 and Forte 5. Despite the zone I remind myself we have a huge size advantage and need to go inside a lot more often.

We take the lead back, our defense is improved obviously, they're missing a lot of jumpers all around. If we could make FT's we'd be up by a good deal more.

Timeout Duke. Moye with his 2nd 3 of the half(I know, I said I'd stop! But I can't!). And Moye with a steal and dish to Forte for a dunk and we're back up 4.

Moye has taken over, with 9 of our last 13 points and assists on the other two baskets. Backups are in for now. I let Duke back into the game in the first half by trying to have the backups run at the same pace as the starters. Not doing that this time.

So much for keeping them from coming back. Gastel with 24 now, he just hit a 3 to cut the lead to 1. Timeout FSU.

Sneed and Forte are ready to come back in, they're back, other starters still sitting.

I call my last timeout and get the rest of my starters back in. Duke still has two. I thought I had 2 left, not just 1, whoops. But regardless, starters (Barrett instead of Ozier) are in for the stretch run.

After a couple empty possessions on each end, Forte beats his man one on one for a bucket, we get a rebound and Moye hits a 3, and we're up 6 with under 4 to go.

Our ball up 4. They score twice straight, most recently a big dunk by Gastel. We got another jumper by Moye on our end.

Sneed with a sweet turnaround on the left baseline. Duke timeout.

Colter hits 1 of 2 at the line after empty trips on both ends. We're up 5 with just over a minute left. Gastel missed a 3 for them last possession. He was way too open heh, we got lucky.

Sneed with another turnaround and that should put it away.

It is indeed put away.

Gastel scores 26 for them and has a huge day. Colter scores 12, but unfortunately, those are their only two truly talented players. We outrebound them 33-22, and while I never focus heavily inside, Sneed does pull down a double double and McCants has a great day on the boards as well.

Forte: 11 points/4 assists
Moye: 27 points/3 assists
Ozier: 2 points
Sneed: 12 points/10 boards
McCants: 4 points/11 boards

Day: 8 points
Alloway: 5 points

Moye shoots 10-22, 4-13 from 3. That's 3-5 in the 2nd half. I keep wondering out loud when I should stop shooting 3 pointers when Moye goes through a cold stretch, but he keeps winning games for me, so the answer is probably “shut up and keep shooting”
