The weather was perfect, and the Notre Dame defense was nearly so as the Fighting Irish shut out San Diego State. The Aztecs managed only 25 yards rushing, 91 total yards, and five first downs as Notre Dame played as well defensively as they have at any time in Coach John O'Farrell's three years at the helm.

The offensive stars for the Irish were RB Oscar Sowers, who racked up 119 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 10 and 2 yards. QB Junior Turnbull and WR Mickey Washington added touchdown runs of their own, and Turnbull threw a TD pass of 5 yards to freshman WR Courtney Cadrez.

The Irish MVP was redshirt freshman G Benjamin Cloude, who delivered key blocks on six running plays.

Notre Dame's record: 9-3.
