For a while, it looked like we were going to beat ourselves this week. You can't keep turning the ball over against a team as good as Buffalo without paying the price, and fortunately, our defense played superbly all day long.

Led by ILB Kelly Austin, who made 20 tackles, the defense allowed the Bulls a single field goal. Wade Goodstriker (12 tackles) and Frank Miller (10 tackles) were also very effective.

Our ground game looked better than it has in a long time, with Ralph Monroe gaining 130 yards on 15 carries. Tim Froese didn't take many chances throwing the ball downfield on a rainy day, but he completed 12 of 23 passes for 148 yards and a TD. Seldom-used freshman wideout Kevin Jennings was on the receiving end of Froese's TD toss.

Recruiting Update
Meet the three newest members of the Golden Flash football family:
  • OT Greg Geller, Lewistown, PA
  • K Tom Rogalle, Menominee, MI
  • S Wes Becerra, Hummelstown, PA
Geller is a bulldozer, the #78 player in the country and the #7 OT. He made the All-State team in Pennsylvania. He aspires to a career as a teacher and a coach, ideally after a long, productive NFL career.

Rogalle is a very accurate kicker who will probably step right in as our starter next year. He's from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and wants to major in journalism.

Becerra, the #18 free safety in the nation, is a 168-pound ballhawk who picked off 14 passes on the way to All-State recognition as a senior. Wes is a superb student who might need a year to hone his football skills.

We lost out on TE Joe Terrell and DE Norman Ackerman, who committed to Cleveland this week. OT Billy Fleming is off to Penn State.

Announcing their intention to visit us next week are:
  • WR Geoff Lincoln
  • OT Ellis DeWalt
  • RB Casey Anderson
The loss of Ackerman makes defensive end a priority. We'll see if we can find someone who's slipped through the cracks.

Kent State's record: 4-2, 3-1 in MAC play.
