I have to admit, this is where I am too. And this is the first season I've watched. I did immediately start rooting for Kenny, and having Angelo as his foil willing to play any sort of game to out his biggest opponent.
I think they did pay more attention to the food in the first episode, but not so much since. Last night was particularly bad.
They've even geared me to like Kenny enough that I believed him when he said that he knew his dishes were right on target in every element. I even thought, the judges must just be screwing with him, making for tension in the audience so that the favorite they've developed is in jeopardy.
