Historically ballparks were set up where homeplate was to the southwest of the pitcher mound. Right handers would thus face west. Left handed pitchers however would face south and thus a southpaw.

If you want to look at some of the historical parks, Fenway or Wrigley are among some of the un-modified older parks still around.

In more modern stadiums, often parks have had to be oriented more to fit them into cities or multipurpose stadiums, so it might not be the case in every park these days though.
