Anything you qualify for an upgrade now will still be usable. What will happen is as soon as you sign a new contract or contract renewal, you will lose any future upgrades. So basically use it before you sign into any new contracts as you won't have it later.
Wade's post was saying to go ahead and get the iphone 4 now with verizon so you can get the clock going for the next upgrade in 2 years. Because of Verizon's timing, you won't be able to do this. The upgrade plan is going away prior to iphone orders being taken.
