I read the abridged version in high school and loved it. I reread the unabridged version last summer and had the very same reaction you did. Clearly Dumas needed an editor.
The only thing I've read so far this year that I would recommend is the Keith Richards autobiography. It is a lot of fun if you have any interest at all in that era of rock music. Unless you're Mick Jagger.
