I think you gotta go back and forth with a guy like that. When he's funny for too long, people complain that he's booked as "a joke." So then he's a monster again for a while. But you can't be a monster forever in modern pro wrestling when you have big TV matches every week and and a PPV every month. The monster aura is going to wear off (like it would have for Andre the Giant and others back in the day if they didn't have the opportunity to switch territories every few months). So the monster schtick gets stale, and he goes back to being funny. They've similarly gone back and forth with Kane for 15 years.
