Here's some basic tips on Guns of Icarus Online from what I have learned - basically at first it will be confusion, especially if playing engineer as the symbols for damage are all over the place, but look for red glowing symbols which indicate components on your ship are destroyed. To start with, work on the hull (bunch of plumbing-type pipework usually near the center of the ship) and the balloon (big tank/steam engine thing usually closer to the top) as those are the essential components. The repair system is basically you can hit a component with a tool and it will repair it, but if it is destroyed you need rebuild - so the big mallet is a big repair tool but the small wrench is great for rebuilding, the monkey wrench is a bit in between,

As a gunner, which I play a lot, keep in mind there are a ton of different guns, and the captain of a ship can choose the loadout so you may see different guns in different places, but the heavy hardpoints are all the same. Experiment with the different guns and get a feel for them - they have vastly different ranges (some are more like a sniper rifle, like the Typhon and Mercury) and others are very short range (Carronades and Flamers.) The flamethrower is quite popular as the fire is annoying to battle on a ship - but all the guns have their place.

Pilots control the helm - the basics of flying are not too hard but there's a lot of finesse to it as you get better - you can control left/right, up/down, and the forward or backward speed. Pilots have various tools which can do all kinds of things like dramatically raise or lower the ship, etc. Keep in mind that if the engines get damaged or destroyed it will really mess with your ability to control the ship.

Additionally, you can click on people's names in the lobby and get options to send private messages or friend them - my username in game is PeregrineFalcon. The chat system is controlled by J, K, L - J is regional chat used in the game lobby that everyone sees, K is team chat for your team - blue/red, and L is crew chat just seen by your ship crew. X is voice chat default - if you are waiting for a match everyone in the match can talk together but once the match starts X is only heard by your crew - the captain (if they are good) will give voice commands telling people which guns to man, what is damaged, etc.
