After reading Dusty's comments I don't think this had anything to do with expectations being to high. According to Dusty he was asked to make coaching changes, specifically firing Jacoby, and he refused. He was also told that the team seemed to lack fire down the stretch. He then suggested that maybe it was time for him to go. After that the owner and GM agreed to fire him.
That sounds like a guy that saw himself above the owner. Dropping a threat like, maybe it's time for me to go, gives ownership two choices, either they let Dusty stay and codify that he's the final say or they call his bluff and move on.
