Pretty much every player is underpayed in his first 5 years, and that extra $2-$3m/y goes to the available 30+ y/o free agents. The FA premium is kind of absurd, but it's also a credit to the owners about how much they've kept costs down, and comparing pre-FA players to Free Agents is worthless.
