It's not a nonsense media driven thing. Matheny himself in the article you posted says it is something that they like to use internally, but that he regrets that it got out and became something that they're known for. At no point does he say that it's a "nonsense media driven thing". It exists.
I guess reading comprehension is not part of the Cardinal Way.
