Think of it this way. Player A is being marked. Player B is in an offsides position near the goaltender. Player A whacks it off the instep of his opponent to Player B, who scores easily.
The exception is intended to show that Player B's reception of the pass is still "directly" a result of Player A's strike, so it satisfies the offsides rule of gaining an advantage while in an offsides position.
In the corner example, Player B is never in an offsides position.

This is my interpretation as well...should have been a goal since the original position was onsides
