Its a fantastic book and well worth reading, especially with regards to the evolution of rules and tactics (and why each occurs).
With regards to tactics and attack/defense over time, this goes in 'gusts' through generation as do styles generally in soccer ... that is a team finds success with a specific style and then that tends to become 'trendy' and other teams attempt to copy it, then another team finds a way to counter it and it goes out of vogue.
One of the most defensive eras involved the Italian style
Catenaccio which ground out 1-0 wins continually.
At present the
False-9 is the current trend with the biggest clubs and is proving fairly effective when done right, however I expect it to be 'nerfed' in the next season or two ... its not impossible to defend against, its more how used to playing against it the opposition are.
