Bob's an emotional guy. Maybe he doesn't know & figures he's screwed. But if he does know and he was bitten as seems to be the popular thought he could simply have been crying because of the close call, or because he's "found someone", or he could figure the infection may kill him even when the walker encounter didn't. It's Bob, who knows WTF he was thinking.

But what Bob hypothetically knows doesn't mean he won't be untruthful if he decides to fuck with The Hunters.
