2015 Georgia Age Group State Championship – Day 1 Finals

We return to the pool at 5 PM for warm ups, and the meet starts about 6:15. Here are the results from the evening session.

#2 Boys 11-12 200 IM

Bear – 2:20.47 : Seeded 9 – The race starts, and again Bear’s fly is solid with a 30.31 split. Then Bear goes a 35.56 is back, and he basically matches his teammate Nicklas (who is a top State backstroker, and swimming right next to him). I believe this is more to do with Bear being stronger and willing to push more, as Nicklas was about a full second off from the morning split in the backstroke leg, and Bear was down a fraction of a second from earlier in the day. In the Breast leg, swam a 42.28, a very nice time for him in what is his weakest stroke – in fact, he was faster in that split than 4 other swimmers, something that would have been unthinkable coming into this season. He closed the race with a 30.82 free. His overall time was another personal best of 2:18.97, dropping about a second and a half from the morning. He also beat Nicklas this time, moving up a spot to finish 8th.

#10 Boys 11-12 200 Back

Bear - 2:20.89 : Seeded 4 – The 200 back was one of the events that wasn’t swum prelim/finals for the 12 and under age group. Basically, the 20 fastest times swim in the evening, which is why this wasn’t part of the prelim write up. While Bear came in seeded fourth, we didn’t expect him to finish that high. His backstroke turns are a bit weak, and with the drops that occur during the State Meet we expected him to fall back some, we just wanted him to get a top 10 finish and earn some points. The race basically played out exactly how we expected, with Bear swimming a solid time of 2:21.06. Unfortunately, not a personal best, but only .17 off of it, and with the fatigue from the 1000 in the morning, plus the 200 IM twice, the slight increase really wasn’t unexpected. The time was good enough for 10th.

#13 Girls 11-12 100 Fly

Bailey – 1:03.96 : Seeded 8 – We were thrilled that Bailey even made finals in this event. However, she felt that she could have won her heat and was setting a goal in this race to get her time down under 1:03.00. She opened with a 29.10 (a drop of .4 from the morning), and she brought it home in 33.60. Final time - 1:02.70; Which was also good enough to climb 2 more spots in the standings and finish 6th overall.

Points earned on the day

Bear – 13
Bailey - 7
