So we heard from Coach Andy last night, and yes, as expected the 1650 will be scored 11-12s and then 13-14s. So we were left with the dilemma of “what should Bear swim”. Adding a short sprint to a schedule isn’t a really big deal, but adding a 1650 takes some major thought. In our (coach and my) discussion we basically determined that if Bear wanted to swim the 1650, that we needed to make sure it was the last thing he did for the weekend. That after his tough schedule, the 1650 was likely to completely tax his system and prevent him from swimming well after that event. This meant that we’d have to make sure that Bear’s seed time in the 200 fly wasn’t automatically going to place him in finals. Also we had to determine what event he would need to drop, and after some discussion about the 100 Fly, and the 100 Free, it became pretty obvious the right choice would be the 200 IM. It is scheduled for Sunday with the 200 Fly and the 1650, so no need to tax him further on the last day. Coach wasn’t terribly thrilled about him not swimming either of the Ionger IMs, but he felt that was going to be the best bet.

So at practice Coach Andy pulled Bear aside and talked with him about his options, and as you probably guessed Bear wants to do the 1650. In fact, he wants to get the team record in that event, which is a 17.41.20. Bear’s PB, in case you are wondering is 18:33.00 swum in December. Given that Bear did want to swim the 1650…here is what happens:

Bear’s seed time in the 200 Fly has been adjusted by adding 10 seconds, which will insure he swims in the morning. This is going to be interesting because my initial peeks into the potential seeds indicate Bear has a strong chance of being top 10. The only problem is that he does better chasing a rabbit (as noted by his strong finishes at State), and in this arrangement all the speed will have to come from him, because he should be faster than those he’ll swim against. Also he will be dropping the 200 IM.

The Psych Sheet is supposed to be out early next week, and I believe we’ll have 1 last chance to make a change to his schedule after that is posted. It will be very interesting to see how he stacks up against the best from the Southeast.
