They handled it differently yesterday than they did today. Yesterday was an immediate pre-game warning due to the dirty play by Lawrie in Friday's game, which resulted in immediate ejection of Ventura. Today, no pre-game warning was issued, so when Kasmir hit Cain, he issued a warning. So basically the Royals have no way to retaliate without losing another pitcher.

There were two ways to better handle it by the umpires.

1. Issue a pre-game warning again, warning them to keep it clear or face immediate ejection.

2. Let Cain walk down to first base and issue no warning. The home plate umpire actually was going to do exactly that, but then crew chief Jim Joyce decided to interject himself. You could clearly see the home plate umpire saying he didn't want to issue a warning, but Joyce overruled him in the ensuing conversation.
