Today you have to go outside that framework and break those walls or it doesn't even really count as comedy. Watched several episodes from that era recently (courtesy of the 17 y/o in fact) and I understand exactly what you mean.
The Groucho Marx episode with Claudette Colbert as the mystery guest is some of the funniest television ever. And a fascinating watch.
