I've found another fix that helps tremendously. I have a computer just below the recommended specs for the game, and when I first tried it out, it crashed every time. Couldn't even get to the title screen.
Then I turned off my wi-fi and used Task Manager to shut Steam down and ran it again in offline mode. Works like a charm, now. Every time.
Have I said before how much I hate Steam? Yes, yes I have.
