Group A, Round 1, Game 1

#6 Minnesota at #1 Arizona

Starting Pitchers

Carl Pavano (MIN) vs. Ian Kennedy (ARI)

Game Recap

The Twins exploded for 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning off normally reliable Arizona closer J.J. Putz to get a 6-3 upset win to open up the tournament. Minnesota batted around in the 9th, getting 5 singles and a double, but will play their next game without Ben Revere and Alexi Casilla, who were both ejected and based on the tournament rules are suspended for the next game.

Group A, Round 1, Game 2

#5 New York Mets at #2 St. Louis

Starting Pitchers

Mike Pelfrey (NYM) vs. Kyle Lohse (StL)

Game Recap

This one was all Cardinals, as they scored early and often to open up in a big way, winning 11-1. St. Louis hit 4 homers in the game, 2 by Lance Berkman and 1 each by Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols. The Mets needed 6 pitchers in this one as Pelfrey didn't make it through the 4th. Although he won't get the POTG for St. Louis, he easily could have, as Lohse went 8 innings and allowed just 5 hits. New York avoided the shutout by scoring their lone run in the 9th, but surprisingly their player of the game is not the player that had their RBI. Take a look.

Players of the Game

New York Mets- 3B David Wright -- 3-4, 2B
St. Louis- RF Lance Berkman -- 3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, BB

Group A, Round 1, Game 3

#4 Oakland at #3 Boston

Starting Pitchers

Trevor Cahill (OAK) vs. Josh Beckett (BOS)

Game Recap

The Red Sox used a 3 run 3rd inning and a 2 run 5th inning to get a 5-2 victory, as Josh Beckett pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up just 1 earned run. Oakland led off the scoring with a David Dejesus solo homer, but in the 3rd Boston got 5 singles and a walk as they batted around. The 5th inning saw Boston get walked twice, along with a single and a double. Carl Crawford left with an injury in the top of the 7th, and per my rules, will miss the next game. I'm making any ejections or injuries basically mean that the player misses the next game. Honestly, no standout players on either team this game, just a little thing here, little thing there, so to the POTG awards we go:

Players of the Game

Oakland- RF David Dejesus -- 2-4, HR, 2 RBI
Boston- 1B Adrian Gonzalez -- 3-4, RBI
