I had definitely heard about the Bobby Bonilla deal as one of those weird sports contracts when I was younger, but I'd never realized until seeing something about it yesterday that the reason the Mets were doing those deferred money deals in the first place was for the owners to have more money up front to invest in Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme. That's hilarious and I have no idea how that had escaped me.
