I think teams then didn't consider fielding reserve players (heck, they didn't have the option anyway, with barely 20 players on their A squads). Personally, I can't even remember the time before the 4 groups of 4 teams format, I jumped in right after WC'94 got me interested, at the start of the 1994/1995 season.
