As resident nit-picker: I thought Godless was pretty good, but fell apart in the final act. After deliberate pacing in the beginning, in the finale it seemed like there were whole character arcs that came out of nowhere, and then others that just fizzled out into nothing.
Spoiler
- The sheriff spent an hour of screen time slowly struggling with his fading vision/shadow, which was resolved with him shouting "I ain't blind yet!!", then shooting everything and everybody with pinpoint accuracy in the middle of a dust-storm.
- The Blackdom soldiers were given a substantial build-up, as fierce fighters who had already chased and dominated our villains in earlier circumstances, had surprise, numbers and firepower on their side, and then spent seemingly 20 minutes popping out of holes one-by-one, and getting immediately shot in the face, until the entire town was dead.
- For the first two acts 'the German Lady' was a throw-away character, who was confusingly naked on the fringes of a couple scenes. In the third act she's some kind of super hero, who gets a complete romantic arc with some dude we met 3 minutes before-hand.
- There were a few characters (and the hotel owner in particular) that the camera repeatedly lingered on repeatedly, in a way that suggested that the characters had or were going to have some significance...only to never really say/do anything of note.
That said, I still enjoyed it over all, and appreciate any kind of quality western, but I'd probably rate it closer to a 7/10.
