I actually legitimately like a lot of Kate Spade's designs, which I don't say about too many celebrity designers.
But yes, knowledge of her being hospitalized for mental illness would have tanked the brand, even though she was no longer an active part of it long before Coach's $1b acquisition - fashion, despite efforts in recent years to address issues in the industry, is still brutally harsh and unforgiving, with anything less than the appearance of perfection damning.
And it's "chose not to get". She had the resources, she had the support network - she decided not to. "Not able to get help" is the hundreds of thousands of lower income people who can't afford to pay the premium to cut through the long lines of an overburdened mental health system (the waitlist is literally months or even years in some areas).
