beat the Atlanta Braves by the score of 6 to 3.
Cincinnati came up with 3 runs in the 6th inning when they had 3 base hits.
The key offensive moment was provided by Max Venable who silenced the crowd
when he doubled plating all three baserunners. Atlanta was retired without
difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.

Dennis Eckersley dominated striking out 10 Philadelphia batters and Ryne
Sandberg cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Chicago Cubs defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 6 to 2 at WRIGLEY
FIELD.
Eckersley(2-0) gave Chicago a solid outing. He didn't allow much, just 5 hits
and no walks in 9 innings. Chicago rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon.
Jerry Koosman(0-1) was hit with the loss. He pitched 5 innings allowing 6
hits and 2 walks. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Eckersley -
except Philadelphia. John Felske lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon.
He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good
strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately
we were the visitors!'

Bill Madlock had 3 base hits at DODGER STADIUM as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat
the Houston Astros in 10 innings by the count of 2 to 1.
The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings. Finally, Los Angeles pulled
the game out in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Enos Cabell
stroked a base-hit. Mike Scioscia came to the plate and drew a walk. Frank
Dipino then uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball. Mariano Duncan
was up next and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. Bill Russell
came to the plate and drew a walk making Los Angeles the winners and sending
the 53,276 fans home happy. Los Angeles had a total of 11 hits for the game.
Carlos Diaz(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Dipino(1-1) took
the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 4 hits in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Darryl Strawberry blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the New York Mets topped
the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 8 to 6 at THREE RIVERS
STADIUM.
Strawberry had a good day at the plate. He blasted a two-run home run in the
1st inning and ripping a solo home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 5th
inning. New York had 11 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 8.
Rick Aguilera(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jesse Orosco got the save, his 1st. Larry McWilliams(0-1) was
tagged with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 4 innings.

Kevin McReynolds went deep and had 3 RBI and Andy Hawkins went 9 strong
innings at JACK MURPHY STADIUM as the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco
Giants 7 to 2.
Hawkins(2-0) was very good in the win. He allowed only 4 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings. San Diego managed 9 in their victory.
The loss was charged to Dave Lapoint(0-2). His ERA increased from 1.35 to
3.38 as he allowed 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. 'All of my pitches were
working today,' Hawkins said. 'I felt really good out there, and heck, I
think I could have gone longer.'
