I didn't think about the banning of "holocaust denial". It's understandable and (I think) approximates the Trump ban.
So yeah, "they just think the government should be the one banning speech" is a pretty good response. It does seem to be the pot calling the kettle black.
FWIW, note the Newsweek article also quotes others from Mexico, Brazil and (the soon to be disappeared) Alexey Navalny.
