But jobs like bagging groceries and flipping burgers are what high school/college kids did to make some money before they got on a more sustainable path to higher-paying jobs. To get a sense of how much things have changed,
Ramona and Her Father was published in 1977, and the major plot tension (Ramona's father having lost his job) was resolved when he got a job as a grocery store checker, with which he was then able to support his family.
