At least with the prequels I understood the story they were trying to tell: the origins of Anakin Skywalker and how he became Darth Vader, and how that paralleled the rise of the Empire.

I'm not sure what story the sequels were trying to tell beyond the fact that Anakin didn't matter at all despite the last 6 movies because the Empire and Emperor are still here.
