I guess it boils down to they are old and have a nice job they can't be fired from. Guessing a lot of people would take a job like that and treat it as a nuissance.


My impression is that they've rationalized that they are the person that makes sure the rules are followed, and the content/details of the case itself is completely inconsequential to their role & paying attention could/would only invite bias.
