I literally just stop news pages from fully loading in Chrome by using the refresh/X button. There is generally a brief moment between when the article text loads and the paywall code kicks in. It can take a bit to get the timing down, and it's different for different sites/paywalls, but it almost always works. I do this daily for my local news, oops. This does not work for the very advanced paywalls like WSJ.
