I missed the whole aspect of why he was loved in France and hated yet respected in the rest of Europe. Maybe a result of trying to focus primarily on his relationship with Josephine.

FWIW a writer friend of mine had essentially same complaint: that there wasn't much explanation about
why many of things in the movie occurred / were as they were.
