I tried some of the barrier stuff around the outside of the house to no avail.

Yesterday, I bought some of those Terro liquid ant traps, because I cannot tolerate infestation. They swarmed to them like crazy. At one point some ants had formed a semi-circle around one and it looked like they were worshipping it. I got up this morning and there no signs of ants at all. Not sure if they’ll come back, but after 24 hours the traps seem crazy effective.
This is the way. Sprays you buy over the counter are terrible at getting rid of ant problem. Baits and non-repellents (which you can't find at the grocery store and are usually expensive) are the way to go. Terro works ok for a store-buy item, but Optiguard and Advion Ant gel are the professional go to. Alpine WSG is the best spray product for interiors and Termidor (very expensive) is the best for exteriors. A Termidor barrier spray around your perimeter and you will not likely see an ant or many other insects for several months.
