I’m just trying to tick boxes off here of things I don’t actually need to fix. A Google search says that it’s just a simple sensor that lets you know when oil pressure is low (basically a light on the dashboard), but the same search also says it’s a critical component and if it’s malfunctioning it can cause the car to run rough, decrease fuel efficiency, and cause the engine to stall. Anyone familiar with what the heck it is?

I believe it varies by model and manufacturer. Most vehicles it's not a big deal as long as you don't have leaks or any other issues the sensor could miss. I had a dodge, though, that had the sensor go bad though and it caused some annoying issues with the fuel pump, starting, etc.
