Bringing in some thoughts on autism from the other thread...we talked to our kids about what to say if someone approaches them. Both their parents were born here, but two grandparents born in India, which is enough to make them look...something. A few weeks later, we reviewed, and our 15 year old son who's autistic (although he will have a job and pay taxes, can use the bathroom by himself, but spot on about not dating, good call) said he would say "I came here legally" -- and we're like "no, you say you were born here and you're a US citizen." A week later we went over it again, and he was like, "but I *did* come here legally" -- he knows he was born here, I think it's just that when he's speaking, he doesn't think the difference in word choice is important.
