I'm starting to lean toward this not being overtly political. Just a nihilist who probably got too deep into internet culture and wanted to do something big. Most 22-year olds are not deep into politics. And those that are would likely have made it known that that was the reason. The groyper memes are there but some of that stuff is just embedded into young culture now anyway.
And if he was some ardent leftist, the FBI would be plastering that shit all over the news. The fact they've had to throw out so many easily disprovable claims shows they don't have anything on that end either.
So I'm going with nihilistic 22-year old deep in internet lore who was raised as a gun fanatic. Decided he would do something either to make a name or for the rush. Not terribly uncommon with shooters, the one that happened in Colorado later in the day has a similar background.

That's the impression I'm getting. He's a kid from a religious family that grew up heavily embedded in internet culture and likely floated between different groups on the left and right at different times. Given the fact that it's Utah and a Mormon family, probably a bit more on the right, but not all that unusual. A kid trying to find a place where he fit.
