2031 Richmond Archetypes Season in Review

Beginning of Season and Free Agency

I don't make any changes at coach or scout again this year. I have no retirements to report.

My guard of the future, Terrance Winslett is an unrestricted free agent this year. Unfortunately he was demanding to be traded right up until his contract expired and I doubt he will even return my calls this offseason. He is however, my only UFA so I decide to franchise to keep him around another year while I search for a replacement. I might not keep him around, but it's a nice revenge for refusing to sign with me. I also notice my great up-and-coming safety refuses to renegotiate due to being happy despite the fact that he now has four rings in his first four years in the league and started every game last year with a PDQ of 54. Seems he should be thrilled. I wish players weren't permanently unhappy in FOF2k1, but I guess forgive and forget doesn't hold true in this game. I like the way you can "reassure" players in CM00/01 of their value to the team to increase their morale and if I could I would surely assure Goel he has a long future with my club.

I head into free agency this year with $35 million in cap room and 32 players under contract. I think I'll actually be able to afford to grab a good player this year. My needs appear to be at guard and safety which is frustrating cause I have been developing players for those positions for the last few years and now need to look outside my system for replacements. Bugs (at least I consider this a bug.. it might have been intentional) like this make me feel glad I ordered the full version of Championship Manager today. I can't wait to guide the Nagoya Grampus Eight to the top of the Japanese First League (I just think the name is cool). Luckily the top rated player (by my scout) in this year's free agent pool is a 27-year old guard by the name of Rex Corbett who played last year for the Cincinnati Bengals. I don't think he's as good as my guy, but he'll have to do I guess. I make him a four year, $44 million dollar offer. I notice in week two that my starting fullback for the last nine years has been offered a three year $16 million dollar contract by Minnesota and has several teams willing to give him $10 mil for two years. Pretty good deals for a guy who got barely over 500 rushing yards total in his nice years as a starter. He did catch 52 balls for 495 yards and four touchdowns in 2029 so he can play. Perhaps I never utilized him to his full potential and I call him to wish him good luck with whichever team he chooses to sign. Rex Corbett signs my offer in the third week. My 14 year veteran tackle, Stanley Beyer signs a two year $21 million deal with Cincinnati in week four as we essentially trade offensive lineman.. I think got the better end of this deal though. Marty Winslett, a fourth year running back who has never started a game in his career and didn't break 800 yards total in four years as a backup with the A's somehow fleeces Pittsburgh out of $49 million over four years. In week 11 I sign a second year OT to a long term deal and advance to the draft.

Amateur Draft

With the 36th pick in the draft I take Kenyon Lewis should develop into a great pass-blocking guard and fill a need at backup guard for next year. In the second round I get a pretty decent OT with potential to develop into a solid starter in a few years. I grab a kicker in the third round to replace my 41-year old kicker Wesley Holmberg who is the lone player left from my inaugural season. At the end of the fourth round I grab a backup QB. In the fifth round I take a pretty decent QB who fits the bust profile almost perfectly. I grab a FB in the sixth round. I get a pretty good center with the last pick in the draft.

Preseaon

The QB I took in the fifth round busts as expected, but a rookie free agent TE pickup now looks like he'll be all-world in a few years.

Honestly, I think this team has lost a lot and probably shouln't be that great this year. Austin Porras, Cory Matthews, and RJ Harvey, the real cornerstones of my defense for the last 10 years are now well into their 30's. I think we can still be competitive this year because of Summers, but I would not bet the farm on a fifth Super Bowl victory.
