I'm having the same problem. I forget my laptop specs at the moment, but I think it's something like 900 mHz, 128 MB of RAM. I'm currently running a game with England, Spain, and Italy, all leagues open, with one manager in each country. They're all starting at the bottom, and are working their way up to the top, until they meet in Europe -- hopefully. It goes mega-slow.
If I make room on my hard drive, will that help speed things up at all?
