Exactly, if the basic game engine doesn't work, then all the bells and whistles don't matter. Start simple--then start adding on all the extras. The last sim/replay football game I played (I've since lost interest in the sport) was APBA for windows. It may have had alot of limitations, but the actual game worked wonderfully, the realism came from the simplicity.
