Satchel Paige(2-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He allowed 10 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings. Left Outs made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Webster McDonald got the save, his 2nd. Ferguson Jenkins(2-1) was the loser. 'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Paige said. [1]NL PRE WWII AT JAPANESE LEAGUE Pre-Nationals... 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 6 0 HOF Players..... 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 7 0 Win:Kaneda(1-2) Loss:Hubbell(2-1) Save:Sawamura(1st) Homeruns- I.Harimoto(1st), S.Nagashima(4th) In a game for the baseball purist, Masaichi Kaneda(1-2) and Carl Hubbell(2-1) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Japanese League HOF Players finally emerged victorious over NL Pre WWII club, 2 to 1. Kaneda looked very much in control throughout the night. He allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score. Eiji Sawamura was credited with his 1st save. [1]NL POST WWII AT NEGRO LEAGUE II Post-Nationals.. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 1 4 0 Twos............ 0 2 1 1 0 0 3 0 - 7 11 0 Win:Mathis(2-0) Loss:Marichal(3-1) Homeruns- J.Wilson(2nd), L.Santop(3rd), P.Hill(2nd) Verdell Mathis took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Shadowball Stadium as the Negro League II Twos beat the NL Post WWII team 7 to 1. Mathis(2-0) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 7 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 2.25 to 1.82. The left-handed Mathis had his no-hit bid broken up by Roy Campanella who singled with two outs in the 6th inning. Negro League II out-hit NL Post WWII for the game, 11 hits to 4. Juan Marichal(3-1) was the losing pitcher. He served up 3 gopher balls in 7 innings. [1]TURN OF CENTURY AT DEAD BALL ERA Centurions...... 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 - 3 10 0 Ghosts.......... 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 2 9 1 Win:Waddell(1-2) Loss:Chesbro(1-2) Save:Willis(2nd) The Turn of Century Centurions nipped the Dead Ball Era Ghosts 3 to 2 at Deadball Park in a hard fought contest. Dead Ball Era was unable to claim the lead after Turn of Century went ahead in the top of the 6th inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. Turn of Century totaled 10 on the night. Rube Waddell(1-2) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Waddell got help from Vic Willis who earned his 2nd save. Jack Chesbro(1-2) was charged with the loss. [1]AL PRE WWII AT CARIBBEAN Pre-Americans... 0 0 2 0 3 4 0 1 1 - 11 18 0 Estrellas....... 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 2 0 - 4 8 1 Win:Grove(2-1) Loss:Cuellar(0-2) Homeruns- E.Averill(3rd), T.Lazzeri(1st), P.Coimbre(2nd), O.Linares(4th), H.Espino(1st) Lefty Grove was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game and Earl Averill hit a grand slam as the AL Pre WWII ballclub defeated the Caribbean Estrellas by a score of 11 to 4 at Paradise Park. Averill enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He delivered a single in the 5th inning, emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 3rd of the season) in the 6th inning and laced a base-hit which scored a run in the 9th inning. AL Pre WWII rapped out 18 hits for the night. The victory went to Grove(2-1) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. The losing pitcher was Mike Cuellar(0-2). He allowed 13 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. [1]LATE 20TH AT FOFC Modern Stars.... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 4 0 All Stars....... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 8 0 Win:Nielsen(2-0) Loss:Smoltz(2-1) Rob Nielsen struck out 14 batters as the sizzling FOFC All Stars defeated the Late 20th Modern Stars 1 to 0 at FOFC Stadium. Nielsen(2-0) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Late 20th hitters. He gave up just 4 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.93 to 1.85. Late 20th threatened in the 9th but FOFC was able to put down the rally. The loss was charged to John Smoltz(2-1) in relief. Benton Breeze was asked about the performance of Nielsen, 'He had his good stuff out there tonight. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'
