Steve Victory JOURNAL – Recruiting 2028-29

Coach Victory had five spots to fill in his first year at Cal and lands a nice class (it will be named third in the nation behind Duke and Providence before the start of next season). The coach doesn’t really get any blue-chippers, and that’s by design. He wants five solid guys to sign with Cal, and so attacks the “second tier” of recruits with a vengeance, not risking much $$ in recruiting top-10 guys who might opt for the NBA out of high school anyway. In the end, the Golden Bears are getting five solid guys! Here’s the breakdown:

1) PG Pat Matthew (#44 in nation, 6-2, from California): Victory’s first catch comes from his new home state!

2) SF Scott Ward (#42 in the nation, 6-8 from Washington): Victory likes his size and potential.

3) SG James Bennett (#43 in the nation, 6-4 from Oregon): Victory works the West pretty well for a rookie coach here…

4) PF Sammy Crowell (#40 in the nation, 6-9 from Kentucky): Nice addition from Victory’s old stomping grounds, the South Region. He was overlooked by bigger schools but has all “Good” ratings and stellar HS stats (17 ppg, 10 rpg, 4 bpg).

5) SG Adam Dunn (#96 in the nation, 6-3 from Florida): Victory’s connections help land this diamond in the rough, who has “Excellent” potential and “Good” ratings on offense, defense and handling…

The building of the Cal Golden Bears has begun, as noted in newspapers around the country, even Raleigh, NC.

“Just make the tournament next year,” administrators remind Victory.

“We will,” the coach says for the 100th time… “We will...”
