Steve Victory JOURNAL - Season #28 (2030-31)

You can look at Steve Victory’s third season at Cal in two ways.

First you can be impressed that Victory led the Golden Bears to 31 wins – the most for the school since the calendar rolled into the 2000’s. They earned a number one national ranking during parts of the season, went 14-4 in Pac-10 play and advanced to the Pac-10 tournament championship game for the first time in awhile. Haas Pavilion was rocking on most nights!

Or, you could be depressed that the Bears won only two games in the NCT. Even though Cal went as a number one seed in the Midwest Region, Southern Illinois KO’d them from the tournament in the Sweet 16. [This author is even more depressed because he resimmed Cal’s season for the heck of it starting with the Pac-10 championship game and led the Bears to the NCT title with just a few adjustments!! Too bad that doesn’t count].

Which path do you think Victory takes? Yes, he’s pretty depressed. With this group, he expected a Final Four berth at least. He really thought all season that Cal could win the NCT but they tanked (choked?) against the 12th seeded Salukis. “What the heck is a Saluki anyway?” Victory kept muttering afterward.

Of course, Southern Illinois lost to Marquette by 20 points in the Elite Eight. And of course, one of Victory’s arch-enemies while at Alabama, Mississippi State, won the NCT title. “It could have been us,” Victory said again and again. It was the worst he’s felt since winning 40 straight games at N.C. State only to lose to Illinois in the NCT title game (one of the losses that may have led him to flee to Berkeley in the first place)…

Victory’s little bro knows exactly how Steve is feeling. N.C. State also made an early exit from the NCT, falling to UConn in the second round. Not a good year for these two...
