Joe Johnson pitched a complete game as the Atlanta Braves defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3 to 2 at FULTON CTY STADIUM.
Atlanta delivered all the runs required in the 8th inning with 3 runs on 2
hits. After an out was recorded, Claudell Washington started the attack as
he drew a walk. Paul Zuvella was next and he laced a single. Dale Murphy
then belted a three-run homer (his 9th of the season). The game was a
scoreless duel until the 8th inning.
The victory went to Johnson(1-0) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Kevin
Gross(2-2) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 and
1/3 innings.
The Atlanta ballclub's record now stands at 13-19. With the loss,
Philadelphia has a record of 6-4 lately, 15-17 overall.

Ed Lynch completed the game without help from the bullpen and catcher Gary
Carter jacked one out of the ballyard and had 4 RBI at The Astrodome as the
New York Mets beat the Houston Astros by the count of 9 to 4.
New York came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
scoring 5 runners on 5 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Carter who
deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he rifled a three-run blast
(his 9th of the season). New York totaled 14 on the afternoon.
Lynch(2-0), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The loss was
charged to Frank Dipino(4-4) in relief. He was knocked around pretty good,
giving up 5 runs in 2 innings.
New York now has a record of 18-13. Houston has a record of 14-19 after the
loss.

Herm Winningham had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos topped the Cincinnati
Reds by a score of 5 to 1 at OLYMPIC STADIUM.
Montreal jumped on top of Cincinnati in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring
one runner. Montreal banged out 7 on the afternoon.
Bill Gullickson(2-3) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory.
Gullickson got relief help from Jeff Reardon who gained credit for his 14th
save. Jay Tibbs(0-7) absorbed the loss.
