New York erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Dan Pasqua who silenced the crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 1st of the season). New York finished with 13 hits while California ended up with 7. The victory went to Rich Bordi(3-1) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Donnie Moore(0-3) was the loser in relief. Billy Martin was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.' TEXAS AT CHICAGO Rangers......... 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 1 - 4 7 1 White Sox....... 0 3 0 0 2 0 1 0 - 6 9 0 Win:Davis(2-1) Loss:Russell(1-5) Save:James(6th) Homeruns- D.Slaught(4th), D.Walker(3rd) Marc Hill had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago White Sox topped the Texas Rangers by a score of 6 to 4 at COMISKEY PARK. In the bottom of the 5th inning Chicago went on top for good when they tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. Texas had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Joel Davis(2-1) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Bob James earned his 6th save. Jeff Russell(1-5) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. With this win, Chicago has a 13-20 record. They have been 4-6 lately. With the loss Texas now has a record of 13-22. BOSTON AT CLEVELAND Red Sox......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 5 0 Indians......... 0 1 2 1 0 1 0 0 - 5 11 0 Win:Smith(3-2) Loss:Boyd(3-3) Save:Creel(1st) Homeruns- A.Thornton(5th), G.Vukovich(2nd) Roy Smith(3-2), with relief help from Keith Creel, shut down the Boston Red Sox hitters at MUNICIPAL STADIUM. The Cleveland Indians came away with a 5 to 0 victory. Smith pitched a solid game. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings improving his ERA from 5.06 to 3.95. Cleveland ended up with 11 hits for the game while Boston had 5. Smith got help from Creel who earned his 1st save. Oil Can Boyd(3-3) suffered the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 5 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. KANSAS CITY AT MILWAUKEE Royals.......... 1 2 0 0 0 1 1 0 3 - 8 13 1 Brewers......... 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 2 - 3 9 1 Win:Gubicza(2-2) Loss:Burris(2-4) The Kansas City Royals had very little trouble at COUNTY STADIUM downing the Milwaukee Brewers. The score was 8 to 3. Kansas City started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first scoring a single run. After an out was recorded, Lynn Jones doubled. After another out, Ray Burris stepped in and he bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch scoring the run. Overall Kansas City out-hit Milwaukee 13 to 9. The victory was credited to Mark Gubicza(2-2) who went 5 innings, allowing 1 run. Burris(2-4) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 4 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings. TORONTO AT MINNESOTA Blue Jays....... 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 3 - 4 8 0 Twins........... 0 0 0 1 0 3 2 2 - 8 14 0 Win:Smithson(6-1) Loss:Clancy(3-2) Save:Davis(1st) Homeruns- A.Oliver(2nd), T.Brunansky(3rd), G.Gaetti(7th) Third baseman Gary Gaetti cracked a homer at METRODOME where the Minnesota Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 8 to 4. Minnesota had 3 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Mark Salas who made the Minnesota fans a happy lot when he laced a single plating two runs. Minnesota had 14 hits for the afternoon while Toronto had 8. Mike Smithson(6-1) allowed 1 run in 6 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Ron Davis was credited with his 1st save. The losing pitcher was Jim Clancy(3-2). The Minnesota ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 21-15. Toronto has a record of 27-8 after the loss. DETROIT AT OAKLAND Tigers.......... 1 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 0 - 5 11 0 A's............. 0 3 3 0 0 0 0 2 - 8 11 0 Win:Codiroli(6-3) Loss:Berenguer(1-2) Save:Howell(8th) Dwayne Murphy had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at OAKLAND COLISEUM as the Oakland A's beat the Detroit Tigers by the count of 8 to 5. Detroit was unable to claim the lead after Oakland went ahead in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Donnie Hill who elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he slapped a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Both teams finished the game with 11 hits. Chris Codiroli(6-3) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. Codiroli got relief help from Jay Howell who gained credit for his 8th save. Juan Berenguer(1-2) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. Oakland now has a record of 17-19. With the loss, Detroit has a record of 5-5 lately, 21-13 overall. Seattle took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning as they scored 3 runs on 2 base hits. The big moment was provided by Jack Perconte who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he doubled which was good for two runs. Baltimore was out-hit by Seattle, 16 hits to 10. Frank Wills(3-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and allowing 5 runs. The loss was charged to Mike Boddicker(4-2). He had trouble throwing strikes and issued 5 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.
