Ron Oester had 3 base hits as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago Cubs by
the score of 7 to 1 at WRIGLEY FIELD.
In the 4th inning Cincinnati went on top for good with 2 runs on 3 hits. Nick
Esasky opened up the scoring as he took matters into his own hands and
smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 5th of the season). Pete Rose came next
and he lashed a single. Rose got a good lead and stole second. Dave
Concepcion followed and he was hit by a pitch. After an out was recorded,
Oester stepped in and he delivered a base-hit scoring the final run of the
inning. Cincinnati had 12 hits for the afternoon while Chicago had 7.
The victory was credited to Jay Tibbs(1-7) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run.
John Franco earned his 2nd save. Dennis Eckersley(4-2) was hit with the
loss.
The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 15-23. With the loss Chicago
now has a record of 18-18.

Bill Madlock cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Los Angeles Dodgers
topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 4 to 2 at OLYMPIC STADIUM.
Madlock enjoyed a big day at the plate. He stroked a single in the 1st
inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 3rd inning and smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 6th of the season) in the 7th inning. Los Angeles
had 9 hits for the game and Montreal had 4.
The win was credited to Bob Welch(2-1) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 2
runs. Ken Howell got the save, his 6th. Bryn Smith(5-1) ended up with the
loss.

Garry Templeton had 4 hits and 6 RBI as the San Diego Padres staged a dramatic
comeback over the New York Mets by a score of 9 to 8 at SHEA STADIUM.
San Diego scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3
base hits. Steve Garvey led off and started the rally when he slapped a
base-hit. Carmelo Martinez stepped up next and he drew a walk. After an out
was recorded, Jerry Royster stepped in and he was walked intentionally to
load the bases. Templeton stepped in and he ripped a base-knock bringing in
two baserunners. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, New York could not
get the win.
Tim Stoddard(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing 1
run. Goose Gossage gained credit for his 9th save. The loss was charged to
Jesse Orosco(1-3) in relief.

Kevin Gross whitewashed San Francisco at VETERANS STADIUM where the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants by the score of 3 to
0.
Gross(3-2) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He surrendered only 8 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.25 to 2.70. Neither team
managed to score after the 3rd inning.
Mike Krukow(3-2) absorbed the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 6
innings.

The Houston Astros edged the Pittsburgh Pirates at THREE RIVERS STADIUM by the
score of 5 to 4.
In the top of the 7th inning Houston scored 2 runs. The key offensive moment
was provided by Bill Doran who silenced the crowd when he cleared the fences
for a two-run home run (his 4th of the season). Pittsburgh made it exciting
in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win went to Nolan Ryan(5-3) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. Ryan got help
from Jeff Calhoun who earned his 1st save. Al Holland(0-2) was charged with
the loss in relief.

Rafael Ramirez had 2 base hits as the Atlanta Braves defeated the St. Louis
Cardinals in 10 innings by a score of 2 to 1 at BUSCH STADIUM.
The score was tied at 1 after nine. Atlanta won the game in the 10th inning.
After two were out Dale Murphy laced a single, and an error was also
committed. Terry Harper next to the plate and he singled. Ramirez then
doubled scoring the run. For the game Atlanta out-hit St. Louis 10 to 6.
Jeff Dedmon(1-1) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Ricky Horton(0-3) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 2
innings and surrendered 4 hits and no walks.
