Boston came up with 5 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 6 base hits. That early run support was enough for Bob Ojeda(4-3) and Boston. Boston finished with 13 hits while Minnesota ended up with 10. Frank Viola(2-5) absorbed the loss. Boston scored big getting 5 runs off him in 2 and 1/3 innings. The winning ways continue for Boston. They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. With the loss, Minnesota has a record of 4-6 lately, 23-20 overall. Shelby led the offense for Baltimore. He lined a single in the 1st inning, smacked a one-base hit plating a run in the 4th inning, lashed a single in the 6th inning and launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th inning. Baltimore had 14 hits for the afternoon. McGregor(4-3) was credited with the shutout. Kirk McCaskill(2-5) was the losing pitcher. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 8 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings. 'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said McGregor. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything went well.' Bell had a big day against Chicago. He cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 3rd inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 12th of the season) in the 7th inning. Toronto and Chicago each finished the afternoon with 12 hits. The win was credited to Doyle Alexander(5-4) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs. Alexander was helped out by Tom Henke who recorded his 11th save. Britt Burns(4-4) was the loser. The Kansas City Royals topped the struggling Texas Rangers by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. Kansas City did all the necessary damage in the 1st inning when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits. That early scoring was all that Bud Black(5-4) needed. Texas threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Black got help from Dan Quisenberry who earned his 9th save. Burt Hooton(3-5) took the loss. Kansas City continued on their recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 6 games and counting. CLEVELAND AT MILWAUKEE Indians......... 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 - 2 7 3 Brewers......... 1 1 0 0 0 2 0 1 - 5 8 0 Win:Higuera(5-4) Loss:Schulze(3-5) Ted Higuera allowed George Bamberger to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game and Paul Molitor had 2 base hits as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cleveland Indians by the score of 5 to 2 at COUNTY STADIUM. Milwaukee promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring one runner using 3 hits. Milwaukee finished with 8 hits in the victory. Higuera(5-4) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Don Schulze(3-5) suffered the loss. He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 walks. Milwaukee now has a record of 12-29. With the loss Cleveland now has a record of 14-30. NEW YORK AT OAKLAND Yankees......... 0 2 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 - 5 10 0 A's............. 1 0 1 2 1 0 0 1 - 6 13 1 Win:Atherton(2-2) Loss:Bordi(4-2) Homeruns- B.Bochte(5th), M.Heath(5th) One run was the difference at OAKLAND COLISEUM as the Oakland A's defeated the New York Yankees 6 to 5. The game was decided in the 8th inning. After two outs Dwayne Murphy doubled. Mike Heath came to the plate and doubled scoring the run. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times. The win went to Keith Atherton(2-2) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Rich Bordi(4-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 3 innings. DETROIT AT SEATTLE Tigers.......... 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 5 9 2 Mariners........ 0 0 0 3 3 0 0 1 - 7 11 1 Win:Beattie(3-0) Loss:Tanana(4-4) Save:Thomas(5th) Homeruns- A.Davis(10th), I.Calderon(4th), D.Henderson(6th) In a close game it was the Seattle Mariners 7, the Detroit Tigers 5 at The Kingdome. Seattle scored 3 runs in the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. After two outs Jack Perconte got things rolling when he stroked a one-base hit, and an error was also committed. Phil Bradley came next and he doubled driving in a run. Alvin Davis then popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 10th of the season). Detroit proved to be no trouble in the 9th. Jim Beattie(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Roy Thomas gained credit for his 5th save. Frank Tanana(4-4) was given the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.
