I actually didn't try to protect anyone the first night as I mistakenly thought plain villagers were also called hoplites. In fact, in my first post I nearly declared myself a villager and a hoplite.

Truthfully I think the best argument for declaring war was one I wasn't willing to go for but Poli did. I conjured up some bullshit story for myself declaring war when in reality my reason was much the same as Poli's. It would have been more fun that way.
