Over 29,000 fans were treated to a fine game at FENWAY PARK as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Boston Red Sox put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 4th inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Boston ended up winning it in
the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Marc Sullivan lined a one-base
hit. Steve Lyons followed and he stroked a single. Glenn Hoffman then
banged out a single to load the bases. Marty Barrett came up and he drew a
walk making Boston the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration.
Boston kept the scorekeepers busy in the 4th inning which saw them plate 4
runs on 5 hits. Boston had 21 hits for the afternoon while New York had 8.
The victory went to Mark Clear(2-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Brian
Fisher(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 1
and 2/3 innings.

Designated hitter Roy Smalley had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Frank Viola
completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Minnesota Twins
defeated the California Angels 11 to 4 at ANAHEIM STADIUM.
California was unable to claim the lead after Minnesota went ahead in the top
of the 2nd inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by
Smalley who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he stroked a
base-hit plating two runs. Minnesota finished with 9 hits in the victory.
Viola(1-0) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. Ron Romanick(0-1)
was charged with the loss. He allowed Minnesota 8 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings
of work.

One run was the difference at TIGER STADIUM as the Detroit Tigers defeated the
Cleveland Indians 3 to 2.
Cleveland was unable to recover after Detroit went ahead in the bottom of the
5th inning scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits. Cleveland made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win was credited to Walt Terrell(1-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing
2 runs. Terrell was helped out by Willie Hernandez who recorded his 2nd save.
Vern Ruhle(0-1) was given the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits and
2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Terrell, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'

Buck Martinez had 2 base hits at ROYALS STADIUM as the Toronto Blue Jays beat
the Kansas City Royals in 12 innings by the count of 7 to 6.
Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Toronto came out on
top in the 12th inning. Cliff Johnson drew a walk. Two outs later Damaso
Garcia stepped in and he slapped a single. Ernie Whitt then stroked a
one-base hit, and an error was also committed, scoring the run. Toronto
rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.
The winning pitcher was Dennis Lamp(2-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Dan
Quisenberry(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 3
hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Brewers by the score of 4 to 2 at COUNTY STADIUM.
Britt Burns(1-0) gave Chicago a solid outing. He was reached for 7 hits and 4
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Chicago banged out 9 on the afternoon.
Bob James earned his 1st save. Bob McClure(0-1) took the loss in relief. He
surrendered 2 hits and no walks in 1/3 of an inning.

-124 fans watched an exciting game at The Kingdome. The Oakland A's topped
the Seattle Mariners by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
Oakland jumped on top to stay in the top of the 5th inning with 2 runs on 2
hits. Mickey Tettleton started the inning off right when he doubled. After
an out was recorded, Alfredo Griffin stepped in and he laced a single.
Griffin was safe on a stolen base. After another out, Dusty Baker came up
and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. Dave Kingman stepped into
the box and drew a walk resulting in a run. Dwayne Murphy kept the inning
going and drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning. Seattle
threatened in the 9th but Oakland was able to put down the rally.
Bill Krueger(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Jay Howell was credited with his 1st save. Mark Langston(0-1) was the loser.
He couldn't find the strike zone and allowed 7 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
