I only went to Hawaii as a kid in the mid-80s... and even then and to a stupid teenager it occurred to me that Kaua'i is frickin' awesome. Sounds like it still is.

O'ahu was nice too but as mentioned a lot more touristy. I do recommend doing a luau just to get that experience. Even if it's an overhyped and probably overpriced experience, you're not going to get that anywhere else.

I have heard enough good things about Maui from others to say that's a spot to consider, but can't make specific contrivutions there.
